Why a frame matters more than it should

Every platform has a shape it wants: TikTok, Reels and Shorts stand upright at 9:16, the Instagram feed likes 4:5, YouTube lies flat at 16:9. Hand any of them the wrong shape and the platform decides for you — it crops the middle out, or shrinks the video into a window smaller than it needed to be, and either way the framing you shot is gone.

This tool makes the decision yours. The video is scaled until the whole of it fits inside the target frame, the space left over becomes black bands, and you drag the video to wherever it should sit — a landscape clip pushed to the top of a TikTok frame with room below for captions is the classic case. The result is a file at exactly the platform’s size, with your framing intact.

What it deliberately does not do

It does not crop. A crop fills the frame beautifully and silently deletes the edges of your video, and a tool that does that by default has made a creative decision on your behalf. Why is my video not cropped to fill the frame?

By choice. This tool keeps the whole picture and fills the leftover space with black bands, because a crop silently throws part of your video away and you only find out after watching the result. If you want the frame filled edge to edge, crop in an editor first and then bring it here.

What do the black bands look like on the platform?

The same as any letterboxed video: the app plays the file at the size you rendered, bands included. Phones show black bands around mismatched video anyway — the difference is that here you decide where the video sits instead of the platform centring it for you.

Which sizes does it make?

1080×1920 (9:16) for TikTok, Reels and Shorts; 1080×1080 (1:1) and 1080×1350 (4:5) for the Instagram feed; and 1920×1080 (16:9) for YouTube. These are the dimensions the platforms themselves recommend.

Why does this take longer than the trimmer?

The trimmer copies frames without touching them. This tool cannot: putting a frame on a different canvas means drawing a new frame, so the whole video is re-encoded. That is minutes of work for long videos, and the page says so before you start rather than after.

Does it enforce the platform length limits?

No — it tells you. If your video is longer than a platform allows, the page says so before and after rendering, and points you at the trimmer. The limits shown carry the date they were last checked, because platforms move them every year.

Is my video uploaded to a server?
